On the road again

No, not me. This time, it's the boys.

Sometime today, Nathan and six friends will head up I-5 and ferry from Anacortes to Orcas Island for a weekend stay, returning Tuesday. It's a quick getaway, one that I know will replenish the spirit with the slower rhythm of island life.

At the same time, Jordan and wife Jamie will also head up I-5 from the Medford area to come and spend a night with us in Portland. They left El Paso on Tuesday, saying goodbye to the desert heat and dreary landscape of Southwest Texas in order to move themselves to Joint Base Lewis-McChord near Olympia, Wash. They're eager to be back in the Northwest and settle into their new home, a duplex on a horse ranch near Lacey.

Unfortunately, the brothers will miss each other this weekend -- and it's a shame Jordan and Jamie also just missed saying goodbye to Simone before she moved to Pittsburgh earlier this week. But the nice thing is there will be plenty of opportunities for us and Nathan to see the newlyweds now that they're within easy driving distance.

I hope there won't be any snags at work today because I'd like to get home earlier than usual to see Jordan and Jamie. Neither one has even seen, let alone set foot in, our new home and I know they will be in for a shock. When Jordan enlisted in the Army last spring, we were still in the three-bedroom home in Grant Park. It's been a little over seven months since we've been in the Irvington condo.
