A mother's heartbreak

Going from the light-hearted (yesterday's post) to the heavy-hearted...

As the number of military deaths in Iraq or Afghanistan mounts by the day (5,377 and counting, according to IraqWarHeroes.org), we can sometimes lose track of the heartache each casualty causes in the families left behind.

In the case of Victoria Walz, a single mom from Vancouver who lost her only child, it's impossible to read of her loss and not feel her pain...and her pride.

Read Allan Brettman's account of Christopher Ian Walz's funeral in The Sunday Oregonian and then reconsider, with me, whether pouring more troops into Afghanistan really does make sense. "Mom: 'He died for us to live' "
