D is for The Doobie Brothers

You'd think "D" would be a no-brainer. The Decemberists are from Portland and their latest CD is at the top of the charts. I like some of their stuff but, truthfully, I'm still acquiring a taste for them.

Could have chosen The Dixie Chicks or Bob Dylan, but decided to go with the band whose music you heard at every house party you went to in the '70s. The Doobie Brothers were at their best when Tom Johnston and Patrick Simmons led the band. Michael McDonald filled in capably when Johnston left the band, but McDonald's keyboards and bluesy vocals gave the group a sound that never quite measured up to the original guitar-heavy flavor.

Here's a link to "Black Water," with the current lineup. It's better quality than two of their signature songs "Listen To The Music" and "China Grove" (below), but embedding has been disabled.

The Doobies are coming to the Portland area this summer -- July 10 at the Clark County Amphitheatre -- but I'm going to miss them because I'll be attending a family reunion in California that weekend.
